Well, the day finally came after about a year of thinking it should have already happened. My childhood dog, Cody, went to doggie heaven today after living 16 1/2 years. We bought Cody after coming back from my first 4-H trip in the summer of 4th grade. Me, mom, and Nick went to the pet store at North Hills Mall and picked him out.....just on a whim. I don't think we went there to intentionally purchase our first indoor dog, but after the phone call to dad to ask if we could buy him, we did.
He was such a good dog. He had a good spirit and soul and loved to cuddle up next to you on the couch or in the recliner. He was so laid-back in his adult age and would greet everyone that came to the door.
He risked his life by running across highway 64, 4 lanes of traffic at rush hour in the afternoon. We thought he was a goner, and then a neighbor across the highway came over to our neighborhood driving around looking for the owner. We were so relieved and happy that he wasn't squashed out there.
He was not a good car rider. He would shake and slobber all over the place until we got to where we were going and then he was fine. He kept his friend and roommate, Lily, happy to have someone around to play with and run around the house with. I think Lily kept him feeling a little younger, as she is a burst of never-ending energy.
We will miss Cody, the Westie that was on all the dog food bags and dog treat boxes......or at least that's what I would say every time I saw one. We know he had a good LONG life but it was time for him to go to doggie heaven where he can run around and not fall down steps or into water bowls! We love you Cody......thanks for all the fun childhood memories and being a great friend and listener!
